I have been fortunate enough to recently have had the oportunity to live in Shanghai for a few years and that has lead me to focus on architecture, via both printmaking and photography because of the many visually textural variances and rapid historical changes within the urban landscape there. My Apartments series comes from many visual explorations around the city of the ubiquitous six story walk-ups that most of the middle class occupy.
I grew up in northwest Washington State and my Underbrush series is inspired by many walks through the dense rainforests of the area. I have chosen to depict that landscape as both cropped fragments of single areas and as unending, expansive views of the micro-environments within.
I have also been making some abstract linear drawings, Red & Black, that begin as semi-random automatic-drawing sketches and resolve into chaotic grids.
This is a short video of me printing one from Underbrush and answering some questions about my process.
