PAINTINGS: Organic Algorithms

My Organic Algorithms paintings are intended to bring a sense of joy and positive energy to the viewer. Inspired in part by a combination of urban living, surrealist automatism and human driven generative art, they are created by combining conscious and unconscious decisions.

Their foundations are constructed of a base layer of white lines on gray backgrounds forming a dense chaotic grid. Each line completing a journey across the canvas while continuously curving in one direction or another, avoiding the space of the previously made lines as much as possible, unless crossing directly over them.

Then new lines are created over the top of the existing ones by employing color and creating new pathways by changing directions at the intersections of the original lines. Some segments are then made darker or lighter, redirecting the visual energy into new spaces.

The process of adding more and more rerouted lines compacts the energy of the contrasting colors and implied linear perspective to raise the energy level and eye movement required to take in the image as a whole.
